Upbeat music suitable for ballet or modern dance.

What is a canon? Canon is like a round such as Row-Row-Row Your Boat, in which a musical subject (called the dux) is imitated at a certain time and pitch (called the comes). In this work, after a short introduction, the strings lead the canon and the brass follow, first in the horns, then the trombone, then the trumpet. This canon is accompanied by a counter subject heard first in the viola and woodwinds and then elaborated by the piano. Several other musical elements accom-pany the canon and the counter subject. The canon is followed by a romantic interlude based on a small portion of the canon. This interlude is then followed by a classical development of most every other musical element. After the development, the canon returns to bookend the piece.

This work weds centuries old musical forms and methods with thematic material appealing to modern ears. It is also suitable for ballet or modern dance. Scored for double wind chamber orchestra featuring an additional basset horn or alto clarinet, with optional bass trombone and tuba parts for larger ensembles. In a pinch, a single trumpet will suffice.
